How to Prepare Your Oregon Lawn for Fall

As the summer months come to a close, it's essential to start preparing your lawn for the fall season. In the Pacific Northwest, fall isn't just about cleanup—it's the single most important time of year for lawn health. The work you do now determines how your lawn performs next spring.

1. Core Aeration: Relieve Compaction, Improve Root Growth

Summer foot traffic, mowing, and natural settling compact your soil over time, squeezing out the air pockets roots need. Core aeration removes small plugs of soil, allowing oxygen, water, and nutrients to penetrate deeper into the root zone.

When to aerate: Late August through September is ideal in Oregon—grass is actively growing but temperatures have moderated, giving the lawn time to recover before winter.

2. Overseeding: Thicken Your Lawn Before Winter

Fall overseeding introduces new grass seed into existing turf, filling bare spots and improving density. A thick lawn is your best defense against weeds, moss, and erosion. Choose a high-quality seed blend suited to your sun exposure—fine fescues for shade, perennial ryegrass for sun.

For best results, overseed immediately after aeration. The seed falls into the aeration holes, ensuring excellent seed-to-soil contact.

3. Fall Fertilization: Feed the Roots, Not the Blades

Unlike spring fertilizers that push top growth, fall fertilizers should be higher in potassium and phosphorus to strengthen roots and build energy reserves for winter. Look for a "winterizer" formula (often labeled 3-1-2 or similar ratio with elevated potassium).

Apply 4–6 weeks before the ground typically freezes (usually late October to early November in the Portland metro). This timing ensures nutrients are absorbed and stored in the root system.

4. Pruning and Cleanup

As the weather cools, prune dead or crossing branches on shrubs and small trees. Remove spent annuals and cut back perennials to tidy the landscape. Clear leaves from lawn areas promptly—matted leaves block light and trap moisture, inviting fungal issues.

5. Irrigation System Winterization

Don't forget your irrigation system! Schedule a professional blowout before the first hard freeze to prevent costly pipe damage. Oregon winters can surprise you with early cold snaps.
